- In 1858, a group of Franciscan Brothers arrived in Brooklyn, and a few months later, in 1859, they founded St. Francis Academy. It was the diocese of Brooklyn’s first private school. The school, which was founded to educate the diocese’s boys, began in a building on Baltic Street and swiftly expanded. Only 25 years later, in 1884, the state government granted authorization to the trustees of St. Francis to “create a literary college” under its current name and bestow diplomas, honors, and degrees.
- St. Francis College awarded its first Bachelor of Arts degree in June 1885, and seven years later, the first Bachelor of Science degree.
- In 1926, the College built a new campus on Butler Street to accommodate its rapid expansion. The Trustees of the College were awarded an absolute Charter by the Regents of the University of the State of New York in 1957. St. Francis began an expansion effort in 1960. It relocated to Remsen Street, where it had purchased two office buildings from the Brooklyn Union Gas Company, doubling its enrollment. It became a co-educational institution shortly after, and more property on Remsen and Joralemon Streets was purchased.
- To accommodate the Franciscan Brothers and give additional space for teaching, the College extended its facilities with the construction of a science building, athletics complex, and residences.
- The School currently has around 2,600 students and 20,000 alumni. They are mostly from Brooklyn and the other boroughs of New York City, although they come from over 80 different nations. In May of 2012, a record 450 undergraduate and graduate degrees in the liberal arts and sciences were awarded.
- St. Francis College is the alma mater of numerous notable public workers, scientists, lawyers, business executives, and teachers, as well as many priests and nuns from the Dioceses of Brooklyn-Queens and Rockville Centre.
