The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African government student financial aid scheme which provides financial aid to undergraduate students to help pay for the cost of their tertiary education after finishing high school.

Note:

NSFAS financial support previously was in the form of loans and still need to be paid back when you find employment after completion of your studies. If you passed all your subjects, 40% of the NSFAS funding for that particular year/semester was converted into a bursary. This means you will only pay back 60% of the loan when you start working

NSFAS is also committed to safeguarding personal information and using it lawfully. You and your parents/guardians are required to participate.

Eligibility

You are a South African citizen with a family income of less than R350 000 per year who has not been authorized for NSFAS financing in 2022
You are a South African citizen with an annual family income of R350 000 or less who has never applied for NSFAS financing.
You are a South African citizen with a household income of R350 000 or less who intends to enroll in a public university or TVET college for the first time in 2022 and need financial assistance.

Nsfas Opening Date for Fresh Applications

Nsfas Online Application opens on 1 September and ends on November 30, 2023.

NEEDED DOCUMENTS

A certified copy of your driver’s license or birth certificate.
Affidavit or certified copy of parents’/guardians’ ID or certified copy of parents’/guardians’ death certificate
If the student is married, a certified copy of the spouse’s ED is required.
If the student is a widow/widower, a certified copy of their spouse’s death certificate is required.
The student is divorced, and a certified copy of the divorce decree is required.
A certified copy of the most recent results is available.
Documents for travel (e.g. invoice or affidavit).
Document pertaining to lodging (e.g. invoice, affidavit or rental agreement).

Employment documents – both parents’ or guardians’ salary advice slips from the previous three months OR a SASSA letter OR a pension slip if the parents or guardians are retired. An affidavit is required if the parents or guardians are unemployed.
A consent form, which you can get here and must be filled out with your parent’s or guardian’s signatures. Applications that do not include a consent document signed by all people whose incomes have been stated will be rejected and considered incomplete.
