Are you in need of financial assistance to study at a tertiary institution? Apply for a National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) bursary.
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African government student financial aid scheme which provides financial aid to undergraduate students to help pay for the cost of their tertiary education after finishing high school.
It is funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training.
The program also manages bursaries such as the Funza Lushaka Teacher Bursary (for students pursuing a teaching qualification), DHET Disability Bursary and other bursaries from the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs)
NSFAS is a bursary scheme funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training for those who do not have the financial means to fund their studies and cannot access bank funding, study loans or bursaries.
NSFAS financial support previously was in the form of loans and still need to be paid back when you find employment after completion of your studies. If you passed all your subjects, 40% of the NSFAS funding for that particular year/semester was converted into a bursary. This means you will only pay back 60% of the loan when you start working
Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje was a South African scholar, journalist, linguist, politician, translator, and writer who lived from 9 October 1876 to 19 June 1932. Plaatje was a founding member of the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), which later became the African National Congress, and served as its first General Secretary (ANC). The Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, which comprises the city of Kimberley, and the Sol Plaatje University, which opened its doors in 2014, are both named after him.
NSFAS Application for Sol Plaatje University
Financial aid is a type of aid based on approved educational expenses. The National Bursary Rules and Guidelines of the Department of Higher Education and Training govern the maximum amount of money that can be spent on education each year.
NSFAS will award support to qualified students based on their allowed cost of attendance, excluding club and society dues and fines.
Applicants must go to the MyNSFAS portal to discover if their application has been approved. NSFAS will notify universities about the funding eligibility of new and returning students.
After registration, qualified students’ registration (cost of study) payments will be reimbursed to NSFAS.
NSFAS will certify the actual funding amount after receiving and processing registration cost data.
It’s vital to remember that until registration data is received, NSFAS has no knowledge of what program of study an applicant has chosen. Even if a student is eligible for financial aid, he or she elects to take an unfunded course. In this circumstance, NSFAS will not process or issue any funding. As a result, it is the applicant’s responsibility to familiarize themselves with the list of NSFAS-funded activities (available on their website)
Criteria for Eligibility
A South African citizen or permanent resident with at least a bachelor’s degree is required.
The N+1 rule should be applied if the student has previously been registered at a tertiary institution and the number of years of registration.
The NSFAS bursary covers:
Food, lodging, or transportation
Personal care and learning materials
You should have your own phone number and email address.
A copy of your ID or a copy of your birth certificate, as well as copies of your parents’, guardians’, or spouse’s IDs
