National Metrology Institute of South Africa

The history of the National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA) dates back to 1947, when the National Physical Research Laboratory wad formed. They form part of the Department of Trade and Industry and the Technical Infrastructure (TI) Institutes.

The companies mission is to provide an appropriate measurement standards to the industry, environmental, health and safety sectors of SA. NMISA’s four core values include: Good Governance; Social Responsibility; Economic prosperity and Measurement Excellence.

NMISA aims to develop and maintain both primary and secondary standards for our country and to compare these standards against international standards to attain global comparability.

Fields Covered

NMISA bursaries will be awarded within the following fields of study:

  • Mechanical Engineering (BTech/ BEng Technology)
  • Mechatronic Engineering (BTech/ BEng Technology)

Coverage Value & Service Contract

The bursary will cover the following expenses: registration fees, tuition fees, prescribed textbook allowance, residence fees, as well as any other and necessary requirements. The bursary allowance will be capped at R90 000 per year of study.

Over and above these monetary benefits, students will also be given an opportunity to work at NMISA during vacations to gain working experience.

Once students have graduated, they will be required for work for NMISA for the same amount of time as the bursary awarded (work back service contract obligation). There is also the opportunity for graduate students to pursue a career in the Science of accurate Measurement (Metrology) at NMISA.

Eligibility/Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • South African citizen
  • Completed a National Diploma qualification OR currently studying towards a P2 work integrated learning qualification
  • Studying or plan on studying within one of the aforementioned fields of study
  • Studying or plan on studying at a recognised South African University
  • Good academic record
  • Highly driven
  • Ability to use hand tools and good manual dexterity
  • Basic understanding of the maintenance and operation of basic mechanical systems
  • Proven financial need
  • The NMISA Human Capital Development programme will select candidates in the following order of preference: Coloured, Indian and African
  • *Preference will be given to previously disadvantaged students
